1D: The Core Concept

A love letter is a heartfelt handwritten message that conveys a deep sense of intimacy. Sometimes it is left in secret locations meant only for the right person to find. Sometimes it is artfully penned as a poem while sometimes it channels all the gushing emotions at once. In fact, the eloquence is irrelevant; what is important is the gesture. Perhaps that is why there is an innate joy in writing and reading a love letter. It serves as a glimpse into the vulnerabilities of the relationship.

How would you feel if you find another person trespassing this affectionate exchange? What if you find an unknown presence lurking in this intimate space? How would you protect your love letters?

Today those analog handwritten love letters are replaced by our fast-paced digital devices. We want to convey our emotions instantly to our loved ones. But have we ever thought about the implications this can have?

Domain Map

Through the combined medium of colors, love letter and cryptography, we want to explore and inform the public about the issue of privacy.

Cryptography is the art of making and solving codes. It involves creating written and generating codes that allow the message to be kept secret. But the task of encryption seems arduous. Its structure is dry and leaves one feeling thoroughly perplexed. It does not invite participation. Love letters, on the other hand, ooze with emotions and feelings. While code talks in binaries of black and white, love poems speak volumes through a range of nuanced emotions. Coupled with colors and codes, words communicate in layers of information in a private manner.

We want to create a playful encryption system, in which colors craft the most intimate exchanges between two people. Colors form an integral part of everyday life. Letters convey unique stories that are drenched in emotions. Hence we want to replace the dull and drab system with our vivid and multi-hued one. By giving encryption a very tangible form, we hope to make the abstract idea of data privacy more comprehensible for the digital technology users.

Together, we are going to deep dive into the topic of color code systems for the English language (Latin alphabets) to translate love letters and its nuances through a color system. We are excited to combine two very rich media — love letters and color in form of code.

Group anonymous feedback is crucial in this ongoing project.

Presentation Feedback:

· Check 1970’s Poster Design. Meant to be hard to parse.

· Check Grafitti Art

· Check Linsday Grace intimate work

· What’s the language of intimacy?

· What’s the narrative?

· What about color blind people?

· Private & Social — Are they that different?

· The color part could be more!

· Craigslist missed connections?

· Think about how to show the letter with colors. Maybe more shapes and background.

· The code of colors sound very rational. Is this match with the love letter?

· The idea of communication is a great field to explore. It’s important in all parts of life.

· Good concept. Need work on details.

· Spelling mistake in design statement.

· Text not clearly visible(white on blue).

· Don’t try to use other possibly irrelevant design philosophies. Stay focus.

· Could you explore the idea of publicizing these intimate letters to promote communication?

· Check how Snapchat makes UI that old people can’t use. (filter user group)

· Good. What about other meanings besides love? I’m really curious about how you express the nuance.

Feedback Technique:

😍: LOVED THIS ABOUT YOUR CONCEPT
😊: LIKED THIS / THIS HAS POTENTIAL!
😅: THIS NEEDS MORE WORK!
🤔: YOU SHOULD CHECK THIS OUT
